A1.8 HOW DO WE AVOID STARTING A CONSUMER PANIC IF WE DISCUSS FRANKLY THE CHALLENGES OF CANADA’S INEFFICIENT JOB MARKETS?

In any public presentation concerning the challenges that we are facing, the emphasis must be on the size of the improvement in the performance of the economy that should be the goal in Canada. This means changing from the old ways to a new way of working, based on a more realistic view of the numbers of full-time jobs that we actually need. It should be emphasised that Statistics Canada’s methods of information collection, analysis and reporting have not kept pace with the needs of the changing economic times.

This has been happening because of a long-running lack of regular consultation between Statistics Canada and the people affected by unemployment and underemployment. They must consult directly with those people, the organisations concerned with helping those people get back to work and the general public.

There is the possibility of a Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for some of those involved if (a) we get it right, and (b) if, in the course of pursuing this, someone involved produces some original academic work. If the Nobel Prize committee thinks it’s important then so should we – and not just because of the Nobel Prize committee.  One other reason for this: we have to teach the Americans something.
