QUESTIONS TO STATISTICS CANADA ON NOVEMBER
20TH 2014, AND THEIR
ANSWERS.
On November 20th
2014, Statistics Canada conducted a live online chat session on the following
topic:-
"An overview of recent
macroeconomic development in Canada"
This focussed on changes in the Canadian economy following the recession in 2008 and 2009, and developments during the first two quarters of 2014.
The chat session was conducted through text messaging and I was able to save the whole session as a .pdf file within moments of it ending
Among other things, my questions
requested an explanation of the meaning and application of terms such as “…given up looking for work…” and “…dropped
out of the labour force…” not
infrequently used in media reports about people out of work (except for the
so-called “official unemployed”).
The
terms “…given up looking for work…” and “…dropped out of the labour force…”
or similar ones are not even defined in the current official glossary of
terms, “Catalogue
no. 71-543-G Guide to the Labour Force
Survey 2014”.
The
questions and answers received are shown HERE.
My comments on the answers
received are shown HERE. As far as I’m concerned, for the reasons given, the
answers received were not clear
